Nearly all lawyers in Colorado act in an honest manner. But sometimes a few abuse the trust placed in them by their clients. In those instances, the Colorado Supreme Court has procedures for deciding whether a lawyer acted improperly and breached the ethical rules for lawyers (called the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct), and whether the lawyer should be disciplined as a result.

Discipline or “sanctions” affects a lawyer’s license to practice law in Colorado. The process does not generally settle a situation for the client by refunding money or overturning an unfavorable decision. Instead, if the lawyer’s conduct is a breach of the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct, the Supreme Court of Colorado will decide on how best to address the matter.
